Mike and I were perfectly content living the life we lived. We were in an addition on his mother’s house, and our daughter, Olive, was able to be close to her grandma, in the house Mike grew up in. On April 1st, 2020, after a particularly difficult time in 2019 for our family with fertility complications, Olive, then three, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mike was laid off because of COVID, and I went on a caregiver leave, as Olive had two and a half years of chemotherapy ahead of her.
During this time of significantly reduced income, and complete depletion of our savings, Mike’s mom passed away shortly after our second daughter, Poppy, was born. I was diagnosed with a variety of health issues that made working impossible, so am now on a long-term leave from my job in health care. Due to the market spike during COVID, and our reduced income, we are unable to qualify for a traditional mortgage in the current housing climate.
My friend and her family acquired their home through the Habitat Home Ownership program, and spoke very highly of the process and the organization. We applied, were approved, and are incredibly excited and grateful to be able to have a home we can finally call our very own. Words can’t really describe how this will impact our lives. We will be able to feel stable and secure in our living environment, with total autonomy over our own space, and our daughters will be able to have their own rooms. We’re so excited to be able to experience the pride that comes with home ownership.
