HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HURONIA ANNOUNCES LAND DONATION FROM TOWN OF INNISFIL
Always Thinking Families First
Habitat for Humanity Huronia is excited to announce a new partnership with the Town of Innisfil. On June 24, 2020, Council was presented with a recommendation to transfer the Town-owned property located at 3122 25th Sideroad to Habitat for Humanity Huronia for the purpose of providing affordable homeownership to qualifying families. The project will focus on building a development that embodies sustainable design, affordable housing, and community engagement.
Habitat for Humanity’s mission of affordable homeownership aligns with the vision that the Town of Innisfil has for its future developments. With this alignment, we are excited to announce that we will be building a Passive House Designated community. Passive House is a stringent designation that can see results of up to 90% energy savings. These savings being passed down to the homeowners is another unique avenue for affordable homeownership.
“This is a great step forward for Habitat for Humanity Huronia and the residents of Simcoe County. This displays that this kind of partnership is what is needed to help eliminate the housing crisis,” said Habitat for Humanity C.E.O. Robert Cikoja.
“This Council is proud to bring these forward-thinking, environmentally-sustainable affordable housing options that can be absolutely life-changing for residents who need assistance,” said Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin. “Especially during these trying times when we are experiencing an economic slowdown, affordable housing options like these will be key to helping many of our hardest-hit residents bounce back.”
With the current COVID-19 crisis, we understand now, more than ever, the meaning of home. Habitat for Humanity Huronia brings communities together to help families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership. We believe in a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
The project requires additional steps such as an Official Plan Amendment, a Zoning By-Law Amendment, and a Site Plan Agreement. These processes can last anywhere from a few months to over a year. We expect construction to begin late 2021 or early 2022. There is still a long road ahead with the planning, but this partnership with the Town of Innisfil will be a landmark for Habitat for Humanity in Canada. It is the first Passive House build within Habitat for Humanity in Canada.
A huge thank you from Habitat for Humanity Huronia to the Town of Innisfil, the Councillors, and the residents for their commitment to help solve the affordable housing crisis in Simcoe County.
