On Thursday March 21st, the federal government announced the 2013 budget which included a renewal of the Investment in Affordable Housing for five years. The funding level will be $253 million, annually – $1.25 billion in total.
Minister Flaherty made specific reference to Habitat for Humanity in his budget speech and in the pages of the Economic Action Plan 2013 document. The focus of his remarks were to laud the success we have had in providing affordable homes and using your home builds as classrooms to support what is the primary focus of this budget: training a skilled workforce. In renewing the IAH, the government indicates that it will “ensure that funds transferred to the provinces and territories through the Investment in Affordable Housing support the use of apprentices, which will support training of skilled labour.”
