Working at Habitat this summer has been an incredible experience to say the least. Not only have I learned how a not-for-profit really works, but I particularly gained knowledge of what working for such an incredible organization like Habitat really means. It’s the hard work and dedication of all its employees, volunteers and community supporters that makes Habitat the success that it is. Providing the opportunity of home ownership to hard working families, Habitat enables economic growth to those who would otherwise continue facing the challenges of substandard housing.
From my first day at the Habitat Huronia office to my last day, myself and the other student were welcomed with open arms. We were given our own space in the office and had fun working alongside each other for the summer.

Within weeks of working at the office I learned that it really is one big family at Habitat, everyone is there for the same reason; to make a difference in the community. Getting to meet the Habitat Huronia families was one of the best parts about this job. They are all such hard working dedicated people that are so appreciative and proud to say they are Habitat home owners. I had comfort in knowing all of our hard work was going towards something that would truly make a positive impact in someone else’s life.
Another part of this job that I didn’t necessarily expect but am super thankful for is learning about and meeting the people who work and volunteer at the ReStore. I didn’t know too much about the ReStore upon starting this position but now know how much of an impact that it makes on the ability of Habitat to continue building homes.
Working as an Assistant Event Coordinator I had the privilege of assisting the organization with our annual Golf FORE Humanity tournament and our CASA - SIP SAVOUR SING event. While the position was hard work, I gained valuable experience in what it takes to fundraise for our upcoming home builds.
Leaving this summer I am thankful for the opportunity to have worked for Habitat and to have met everyone that dedicates their time to this incredible organization. Without any doubt I will be back to volunteer in 2019 and continue to support Habitat any way I can! I will miss the time I spent here this summer but look forward to my future involvement with Habitat.
