21 years of turning dream into home ownership!
Why 21? We wanted to do something that made our anniversary a little bit more memorable, so why not make 21 the new 20!
What does 21 years
look like?
1995 The paperwork was started to create Habitat for Humanity Huronia
1996 Habitat
Huronia opened with only 3 staff with big hearts with a mission to raise money
and start a ReStore to help cover costs and build homes. The territory at that
time covered all of Simcoe County, Orillia, Penetanguishene, Wasaga Beach,
Collingwood, Midland, Port McNicoll, Alliston, Angus and surrounding areas.
1998 The Barrie ReStore formed with only 14,000 square feet, four
staff and one truck.
1998 The first Barrie home was built in January on Athabaska Street.
2002 As
our mission spread throughout Simcoe County the emergence of Chapters began to
occur with the creation of Wasaga Beach, Midland and Orillia
2004 Within the first 10 years, 13 homes have been built!
2006 The
Wasaga Beach chapter becomes its own affiliate and amalgamates to become Habitat
South Georgian Bay and The Midland chapter became its own affiliate.
2008 Habitat
Orillia becomes its own affiliate and will eventually become part of Habitat
Gateway North with Midland.
2009 The Alliston ReStore opened with only 3500 square feet, three
staff and no truck.
2009 The first Alliston home was built on Queen Street
2011 The Barrie ReStore grows to 20,000 square feet!
2011 The Alliston ReStore grows to 6200 square feet and now has a
truck!
2013 The
Affiliate office moved into its own headquarters with four staff and our
territory now covers Barrie, Angus, Essa, New Tecumseth, Bradford West
Gwillimbury, Innisfil and surrounding areas.
2014 22
more families achieve their dream of home ownership in the 10 years since 2004,
nearly double the families served in the first 10 years.
2016 Habitat
for Humanity Huronia takes on a new look to grow their social media,
partnerships, fundraising program and to better reach our community. The Barrie ReStore completes a major
renovation changing the store to be more open concept and customer friendly.
2017 The
Alliston ReStore closed for one month in July for a major renovation to give
the store an internal facelift to meet our customers’ needs and provide a fresh
new look.
2017 As
of August 2017, over 8,647 volunteer hours have helped to run our ReStores, our
build, committees and board for this year!
That bring us to today, 21 years from the very beginning! In 21 years, we have built over 40 homes and we continue to find ways to buy more land to build more homes year after year!
